NEXUS is a Trusted Traveler program that expedites the processing of pre-screened travelers when entering Canada and the US at designated land, air, and marine ports of entry. This means that NEXUS members can enjoy reduced wait times at certain ports of entry.
Benefits of a NEXUS Card
- Cardholders can use dedicated lanes at certain ports of entry along the US-Canada border.
- NEXUS members will also be able to use their cards at self-service NEXUS kiosks at designated Canadian airports
- Members can also use Global Entry kiosks when entering the US through Canadian Preclearance airports.
- Travelers with NEXUS cards can call the NEXUS Telephone Reporting Centre (for Canada) or the local US CBP marine reporting number for that marine port of entry to report their arrival.
- If you are a NEXUS member and crossing the border you can use the dedicated NEXUS lane and stop and hold your membership card in front of the card reader.
- You then proceed to the inspection booth for a visual inspection. The CBSA officer will indicate whether you are to enter the inspection area or proceed into Canada.
Children
While there is no age restriction to applying for a NEXUS card, children under the age of 18 will be required to have their parent or legal guardian’s consent before they can join the program.
Valid Through
The NEXUS card is valid for 5 years. After which, the traveler will be required to renew his membership.
How to Apply for a NEXUS Card
- Here are the steps for becoming a member, from start to finish. There is a non-refundable processing fee of CAN$50 or US$50 per applicant for a five-year membership card.
- You can apply online to NEXUS using the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) that is operated by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (U.S. CBP).
Travelers have two options for submitting their NEXUS application:
#1: Global Online Enrollment System (GOES)
- Step 1: Create an account in GOES.
- Step 2: Log into your account and fill out an application.
- Step 3: You will need to pay a US$50 fee for each completed application for individuals aged 18 and older. The fee is non-refundable and is only payable by credit card. Children under 18 are free.
- Step 4: The US CBP and CBSA will review the application once it has been completed and the fee has been paid. If you are given conditional approval, you will be notified through your GOES account along with the instructions to schedule an interview at a NEXUS Enrollment Center.
#2: Paper Application
- Step 1: Download your application form here.
- Step 2: Complete your application.
- Step 3: Prepare copies of your supporting documents that provide proof of your citizenship and/or permanent resident status and admissibility to either the US or Canada.
- Step 4: Prepare your payment of CAN$50 or US$50 for each applicant over the age of 18. Children will be required to have a separate application, but there is no fee to pay.
- Step 5: Mail your application, non-refundable fee, and supporting documents to your designated NEXUS Program Canadian Processing Center at one of the locations below.
