The Tony Estrada Law Enforcement Center housing the new detention center opened in 2011 and is designed to house 372 inmates. In contrast, the former Santa Cruz County Detention Center on Hohokam Drive opened in 1974 and was designed to house 52 inmates. At that time, Santa Cruz County had a population of 15,000 residents and Nogales, Sonora had a population of approximately 65,000. Since 1974, the population of Nogales, Arizona has tripled and today, the population of Nogales, Sonora is estimated at 350,000 people. In addition, problems related to drug trafficking and illegal immigration have increased dramatically.
