It was created in 1979 to include Barnes, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, LaMoure, Ransom, Richland, Sargent and Stutsman counties. In 1993, Wells County was transferred to this district from the South Central Judicial District. In 2000, Griggs County was transferred to this district from the Northeast Central Judicial District. In 2014, Kidder, Logan and McIntosh counties were transferred to this district from the South Central Judicial District.
