South Burlington, VT Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility (CRCF) View
Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility, located in South Burlington is a prison that houses approximately 155 female offenders. This facility was originally built in the 1970's to house 88 inmates while they were temporarily awaiting trial. In 2012 problems arose because of many shortcomings this facility had, including unsanitary conditions (there were not nearly enough toilets for the 150+ inmates), and the facility was not handicap accessible. Additionally, inmates reportedly had no standard uniform and were supplied clothes only by their family and friends, which meant inmates with no support network has insufficient clothing. During this time a report was published and the administration of the facility was changed. Now offenders are provided blue, teal, and khaki uniforms and conditions have improved much. The facility is still changing, and now offers a computer skills course to inmates. The facility has a long way to go to get up to par, and is still regarded as the worst female facility in the state to be incarcerated in. In June 2015 this facility received budgetary cuts that resulted in it losing part of it's education programs, and more cuts are expected in the coming months..
