Oakwood, VA Keen Mountain Correctional Center View
Keen Mountain Correctional Center is a close custody facility located in Oakwood Virginia. The level 4 high facility opened in 1990 and houses up to 880 adult male offenders. Keen Mountain Correctional Center is comprised of three housing units, and a support building that contains a gym, educational and vocational classrooms, medical services, security offices, the kitchen, dining hall, commissary and chapel. Offenders are separated into six distinct populations: General population incentive pods, general population re-entry (for inmates with less than 2 years), special housing (houses segregation inmates), STAR, and Cadres (cadres are minimum security inmates who work in the commissary). Inmates are secured by multiple razor wire fences, electronic detection systems, canines, and four guard towers. Keen Mountain is also one of the few facilities that allows the staff to possess non-lethal weapons inside of the security perimeter and has built in gun ports in the housing unit control room. The majority of inmates at Keen Mountain Correctional Center are housed in cells and are incarcerated for crimes ranging from capital murder to forgery and habitual traffic offenders. Due to the level of violence and dangers most of the inmates at this facility present, programing is often via video, mail, or through small groups. Inmates have access to anger management counseling, adult basic education classes, mental health and counseling services, parenting classes, and several alcohol and substance abuse programs.
