The Iowa State Penitentiary (ISP) is a maximum security institution located in Southeast Iowa. The facility has the capacity to house up to 760 incarcerated individuals and consists of two general population units, a medical unit as well as one restricted housing unit. There are educational programs offered through Southeastern Community College (SCC) and the US Department of Labor to provide academic and vocational enrichment opportunities. Through SCC, incarcerated individuals can pursue adult education such HiSET, English as a Second Language and basic literacy. The Department of Labor allows for Apprenticeships in Cabinetry, Housekeeping and Food Service. Treatment programming consists of Thinking for a Change, ACTIV as well as our LTRH program for individuals in restrictive housing. Incarcerated individuals have access to a wide variety of recreational activities and work opportunities. This includes Iowa Prison Industries which is located onsite. IPI offers individuals the opportunity to learn a variety of skills in the woodworking and cabinetry fields. .
