Rock County
Situated in southern Wisconsin, Rock County was created from Milwaukee County in December 1836 as a territorial county and fully organized in February 1839. Per the United States Census Bureau, Rock County covers 718 square miles of land area and has a population of over 163,000 people.
The court structure in the county is made up of the municipal courts and a single circuit court. The municipal courts are the first level of justice in the court system in the county. They handle cases pertaining to traffic violation, ordinance violation, and some juvenile cases, such as alcohol violations, drug offenses, truancy, and curfew violations. Jury trials are not held in municipal courts and cases with jury trial requests are transferred to the circuit court. Cases requesting equitable relief are beyond the jurisdiction of municipal courts.
Original jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases in Rock County belongs to the circuit court. Jury trials are held at the circuit court, and the court handles civil cases including civil equity cases, general civil claims, probate matters, domestic relations, and most juvenile cases.
