Portage County
Portage County, named for the portage between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers, was created from the Wisconsin Territory in 1836 and organized in 1844. According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a population of slightly over 71,000 and a total land area of about 801 square miles.
The Portage County trial court system comprises two courts: the Portage County Circuit Court and the Stevens Point/Plover Joint Municipal Court. The Circuit Court is the county's main court, and it has original jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters within Portage County (this includes probate, juvenile, and traffic matters). The Municipal Court has exclusive jurisdiction over ordinance violations that occur in the City of Stevens Point and the Village of Plover, including and also handles traffic cases in these municipalities.
In addition to its Circuit and Municipal Courts, Portage County also operates an Adult Drug Treatment Court. This court program offers certain offenders an alternative to incarceration through comprehensive evaluation and treatment for mental health and substance dependence, close supervision, random drug and breath tests, frequent court visits, and immediate incentives or sanctions where necessary.
