Green County
Named for its green vegetation, Green County was created in 1837 and has a total land area of 584 square miles. As of the 2020 census, its population was 37,093. Monroe is the county's largest city by land area and also the county seat.
The court system in Green County comprises municipal and circuit courts. Municipal courts have jurisdiction over municipal ordinance violations and traffic infractions. They can also hear juvenile matters such as juvenile drug offenses, curfew violations, and truancy. Green County municipal courts do not offer jury trials and must transfer such cases to the Circuit Court. The City of Brodhead Municipal Court and the Village of Albany Municipal Court are the two municipal courts in Green County.
The Green County Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction in the county. It hears all criminal, civil, probate, domestic, and most juvenile cases. If there is no municipal court with original jurisdiction, the court can also hear municipal ordinance violations.
