Ottawa County
Ottawa County boasts of a justice system that involves a District (higher) court and seven Municipal (lower) courts. The District Court deals with cases involving the violation of criminal law, such as felonies and misdemeanors. It presides over the validation of wills, child welfare, juvenile delinquency, personal injury, small claims, domestic relations, and administration of estates and trusts.
The Municipal Courts handle traffic-related cases such as parking violations and minor criminal offenses that do not pass as felonies. In addition to the aforementioned, it spells out punishment for offenders who violate county ordinances. These violations include code ordinance violations such as building code violations, health codes, zonal code violations, and other related violations. They also share jurisdiction with the District Court over small claims matters involving amounts within certain thresholds.
The Court Clerk oversees and maintains permanent records of court proceedings. Both paper and soft copies of court records are verified sources for accessing information about judicial proceedings. Court records showcase the process of adjudicating a case from when it was filed to how the judgment was passed.
