Garvin County
Garvin County was carved from part of the Chickasaw Nation in 1906 by delegates to the Oklahoma Constitution Convention. It spans a total area of 814 miles and is home to 25,656 inhabitants. Garvin County's economy thrives on farming, oil production, and ranching.
As a court of general jurisdiction, the Garvin County District Court handles both criminal and civil cases. Criminal cases heard by this court include felony and misdemeanor offenses such as domestic violence, theft, assault and battery, DUI/DWI, burglary, murder, and robbery. Additionally, the District Court deals with disputes related to contracts, ownership and use of personal or real property, personal injury claims, business torts, and disagreements regarding the distribution of assets in a will.
Furthermore, the District Court has jurisdiction over family law matters. It conducts hearings for adoption, paternity, child custody, child support, divorce, guardianship, and spousal support cases. Besides family law matters, the District Court also handles probate matters. This includes appointing a personal representative to oversee an estate, and distribute estate assets to beneficiaries.
According to the Oklahoma Open Record Act, court records that are not required to be sealed in order to protect confidential information are available for public inspection, copying, and mechanical reproduction. It is the duty of the Court Clerk to provide access to non-confidential court records, during regular business hours, to any member of the public who needs to inspect records personally.
