Atoka County
Created in 1907 from Choctaw Lands, Atoka County is situated in the southeastern region of Oklahoma. It was named after a prominent Choctaw Chief, Atoka. Covering an area of 990 square miles, the county is home to 14,143 inhabitants, with white (caucasian) group making up the largest proportion of the population.
Atoka County operates a dual trial court system comprising a District Court and Municipal Courts. The District Court is a court of general jurisdiction that handles criminal and civil matters. Also, the court presides over small claim matters that do not exceed $10,000.
In Atoka County, Municipal Courts can either be "of record" or "not of record." The Municipal Courts "of recordâ€Â, or Municipal Criminal Courts of Record, primarily address violations related to parking, traffic, criminal offenses, and certain misdemeanor cases. On the other hand, Municipal Courts "not of record" are limited to cases involving municipal ordinances.
