Sarpy County
Sarpy County is Nebraska's third most populated county, with over 191,000 residents. It was formed in 1857 and named for Peter Abadie Sarpy, a French-American entrepreneur. The county is 239 square miles in land area, while Papillion serves as its county seat.
The District, County, and Juvenile Courts form Sarpy County's judicial system. The District Court is Sarpy County's general jurisdiction court. It rules on all felony-related trials and civil lawsuits where the amount in controversy is more than $52,000. Other cases exclusive to the District Court include equity lawsuits, divorces, child custody, and other domestic relations cases. The apex court also handles appeals from the County Court and other administrative agencies. The Sarpy County Court often presides over misdemeanors, ordinance violations, traffic infractions, and felony pretrials. It also settles civil claims for $53,000 or less, probate matters, adoption cases, and small claims. Sarpy County has a Juvenile Court tasked with addressing juvenile delinquency, dependency, and truancy.
Sarpy County court records are generated by the designated court clerks during court proceedings. These documents contain details like court schedules, transcripts, filings, names of involved parties, case outcomes, court orders, and sentences. Public access to court documents supports research efforts and promotes transparency and fairness in the legal system. It allows individuals to review case information and hold the county's judicial processes accountable. However, the Nebraska Public Records Law prohibits public access to juvenile and mental health records to protect the privacy and well-being of individuals involved. Examples of court records that are publicly accessible include:
- Civil records
- Probate records
- Family law records
- Small claims records
- Traffic records
- Criminal records
