Clinton County
Clinton County was established and named after DeWitt Clinton in 1831. The county has a population of 79,128 and covers a total area of 575 square miles according to the U.S Census Bureau. St. Johns is the seat of the county.
The court of general jurisdiction in Clinton County is the 29th Judicial Circuit Court. It presides over both civil and criminal cases that are beyond the jurisdiction of the Clinton District Court. Within the court, the civil division handles civil cases with claims over $25,000, divorce, and condemnations, while the criminal division deals with felonies, extraditions, and writs. The responsibility of the family division is to handle cases related to name change, paternity, and adoptions.
The 65A District Court has limited jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. It handles cases relating to land contract, adult misdemeanors, and eviction proceedings, and conducts preliminary examinations in felony cases. The Clinton County Probate Court handles juvenile delinquency, adoption, and trust proceedings as well as filing of wills and codicils for safekeeping.
