Crawford County
Crawford County is situated in southeastern Kansas and was created from the northern half of Cherokee in 1867. It is bordered to the east by Missouri and has a population of over 39,000. With a total area of 595 square miles, it is recognized as the 12th largest county in Kansas.
The Crawford County court system consists of the Municipal Courts and the District Court. The Crawford District Court, established by the Kansas Constitution, has the authority to conduct jury trials for both criminal and civil cases. It holds original jurisdiction over domestic relations and divorce cases, small claims, probate, juvenile matters, damage suits, and conservatorships.
Crawford County Municipal Courts handle legal matters within their respective geographical areas. They preside over cases involving traffic violations, misdemeanor offenses, and ordinance violations. Additionally, these courts are authorized to impose fines, fees, and other penalties for violations.
Following the Kansas Open Records Act, Crawford County residents have the right to inspect and obtain copies of court records maintained by the District Court, provided those records are not exempt from disclosure. Examples of court records that are not available for public access include adoption records, grand jury proceedings, juvenile records, and expunged criminal records.
Furthermore, interested parties can view case information remotely using the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal.
