Marion County
Marion County is the most populated county in Indiana and it was created on April 1, 1822. As of 2023, it had a population of 968,460 people and its county seat is Indianapolis. It was named for Brigadier Francis Marion, an American military officer and politician who served during the French and Indian War (1754â1763). It spans 403 square miles and at present is the only Unigov county (consolidated city-county government having the powers of municipal corporation and county) in Indiana.
The Circuit, Superior, City and Town, and Small Claims Courts are vested with various powers regarding resolving cases brought in by county residents. The jurisdiction of the City and Town Courts, depending on the size of the population of a city, usually covers violations of municipal ordinance, civil cases where the amount of money involved in dispute is $500 or less, and traffic violation cases. The Superior Courts preside over felony cases (including Class D), family law, civil, and criminal charges filed from the prosecutor's office, and misdemeanor cases. The Circuit Court hears juvenile delinquent acts, misdemeanors, felonies, cases involving damages, contract disputes, and medical malpractices. The Small Claims Courts settle disputes in which the amount of money involved is $8,000 and share jurisdiction with the Circuit and Superior Courts on certain cases.
Court records are the official documents of details of activities or proceedings in court premises. Records are kept in archives where such records as probate and guardianship court proceedings can be viewed. The duty of the County Clerk rests in preserving and ensuring the integrity of court records as this clerk is constitutionally elected by residents to serve them.
The public is free to view criminal, civil, traffic, family, and probate court records. This can be done by mail, fax, and email or by scheduling an in-person visit to the office of the County Clerk at 200 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
To request court records, the County Clerk's Office can be contacted at (317) 327-4740. The mycase.IN.gov website provides a means by which court records can be viewed online. You are entitled to search for records by utilizing a name and cross-reference/citation number based searches.
