Hartford Probate Court serves the public by:
- Case types: decedents' estates and trusts; conservatorships of person/estate; guardianships of adults with intellectual disability and of minors; adoptions and termination of parental rights; legal name changes; psychiatric and substance-use commitments; special immigrant juvenile findings.
- Core services: accepts and processes filings; schedules and conducts hearings before a probate judge; issues decrees, letters, and certificates; appoints and supervises fiduciaries; reviews accountings; authorizes sales of property and settlements; orders distributions; maintains records and provides certified copies; offers fee waivers and language/ADA accommodations.
- Protective relief: emergency temporary conservatorships, protective placement/services, involuntary commitment, and emergency custody/guardianship orders as permitted by statute. Note: civil restraining/protective orders for abuse are handled by Superior Court.
- Jury services: none in Probate Court; matters are decided by the judge (appeals go to Superior Court).
