Washington County
Washington County was created in 1828 and named for George Washington. It is located in northwestern Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains. Washington is the second most populous county in Arkansas, with an estimated 245,871 people. It spans 941.5 square miles of land, and its county seat is Fayetteville.
The Washington County judicial system consists of a Circuit Court and 10 District Courts. The Washington County Circuit Court has authority over all legal matters, including felonies and domestic relation cases. The court is divided into the Civil Division, Juvenile Division, Drug Court Division, and Probate Division. The Juvenile Division handles cases such as guardianship, child abuse, and neglect.
Washington County District Courts have jurisdiction over misdemeanor offenses, traffic violations, civil matters involving contracts, preliminary felony matters, damage to personal property, and recovery of personal property where the amount in disputes is less than $5,000. However, District Courts share jurisdiction with Circuit Courts over civil claims.
