Talladega County
Talladega County was formed in 1832 and is located in the east-central region of Alabama. It has over 82,000 residents living within its 747 square miles of land area. Talladega is its county seat and largest city. The people of Talladega County are served by Circuit, District, Probate, and Municipal Courts.
The Talladega County Circuit Court has general jurisdiction over all cases but typically hears cases outside the jurisdiction of other courts in the county. It hears felonies, certain misdemeanors, juvenile matters, some probate cases, and family law cases. It has sole jurisdiction over civil cases with claims beyond $10,000 but shares jurisdiction with the District Court over civil cases with claims between $6,000 and $10,000. Additionally, it considers appeals from municipal, district, and probate courts. The Talladega County District Court handles small claims, certain juvenile issues, and misdemeanors. It also hears municipal ordinance violations in cities without municipal courts, traffic infractions, and civil cases with claims under $10,000.
The Talladega County Probate Court handles admission of wills, appointment of guardianships and conservatorships, management of estates and trusts, adoptions, name changes, and involuntary commitment to mental health facilities. Circuit, District, and Probate courts are located in both Talladega and Sylacauga. The six municipal courts in Talladega County hear traffic offenses and municipal ordinance offenses within their jurisdictions. Municipal courts in the county are located in Bon Air, Lincoln, Childersburg, Munford, Sylacauga, and Talladega.
