St. Croix County
St. Croix County is situated in western Wisconsin. It was founded in August 1840 and is named for the river running across its western border. The county covers 722 square miles of land area and is the home of over 76,000 residents. Its county and largest city is Hudson.
Nine municipal courts and one circuit court make up the trial court system in the state. The municipal courts have exclusive jurisdiction over local ordinance violations. Jury trials are not conducted in municipal courts; all cases heard in the court are decided by a judge.
The circuit court is the chief court in St. Croix County. It has original jurisdiction in all civil and criminal cases. Any case beyond the jurisdiction of the municipal court is heard in the circuit court. Such cases include general civil claims, domestic relations, civil equity cases, probate issues, and most juvenile matters.
