Sheboygan County
Sheboygan County was created by an act of territorial legislature in 1836; however, the county government was not officially organized until December 17, 1838. According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a land area of approximately 511 square miles and an estimated population of 117,752, with about 231 people per square mile.
Sheboygan County's trial court system comprises a Circuit Court and lower Municipal Courts. The Circuit Court has original jurisdiction over all criminal and civil matters that occur in the county and consists of Criminal/Traffic, Civil/Small Claims, Family, Juvenile, and Probate Divisions that handle these cases. Examples of cases commonly handled by the Circuit Court include felony hearings, small claims not exceeding $10,000, contract disputes, landlord/tenant cases, divorce and child support cases, guardianship and conservatorship matters, and juvenile delinquency cases. On the other hand, the Municipal Courts typically handle traffic cases and ordinance violations that occur within their respective municipalities (they usually have exclusive jurisdiction over these local ordinance violations).
In addition to these, Sheboygan County operates a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court that provides certain offenders an alternative to incarceration through participation in intensive, court-supervised diversion, treatment, and rehabilitation programs.
