Ozaukee County
Ozaukee County is Wisconsin's smallest land area county, spanning approximately 609 square kilometers. The name of the county originates from the Ojibwe language, referring to the Sauk people, and it lies 25 miles from the western coastline of Lake Michigan. Within its borders, the county includes 16 municipalities that accommodate a population of more than 91,000 people.
The Ozaukee County Circuit Court is the only court in the county's court system. It is also the state trial court with original jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters. The responsibilities of this court include civil lawsuits involving monetary claims of any value, such as personal injury, contract disputes, and small claims matters. In criminal law, it handles misdemeanor and felony criminal cases punishable by state prison sentences.
Furthermore, the Circuit Court hears legal matters affecting family relationships, including adoption, child support, divorce, and child custody. It also oversees probate matters such as estates and guardianship and addresses juvenile cases relating to neglect and delinquency.
The Ozaukee County Clerk of Circuit Court is in charge of keeping accurate court records and providing access to them upon request. Court records are files submitted in the Office of the Clerk or Court or through the Circuit Court e-filing system about a particular case. Members of the public can obtain publicly available court records in the following categories:
- Civil case
- Criminal case
- Family case
- Probate case (excluding guardianship and mental commitment cases)
- Traffic case
