Grays Harbor County
Gray Harbor County, which was originally named Chehalis County, is located in Washington. It was carved out from Lewis County in 1854 and has a population of over 77,000 people. Montesano is its county seat.
Gray Harbor County's trial court system encompasses a superior court, district courts, and municipal courts. The Gray County Superior Court is a general jurisdiction court that oversees all criminal and civil suits, as well as lower courts' appeals. Typical Superior Court cases include felonies, misdemeanors beyond the District and Municipal Courts' purview, insolvency suits, real property title controversies, and annulments. Divorce, tax-related cases, naturalization proceedings, quo warranto, and habeas corpus cases are also heard by the Superior Court. In addition, the Superior Court also handles domestic, juvenile, and probate cases in the county.
The District Court has limited civil and criminal jurisdiction and presides over traffic infractions and civil claims with financial caps, criminal misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors, and anti-harassment and protection orders. It also oversees initial felony hearings, contracts for the recovery of money or damages, and small claims for amounts in dispute below $5,000.
Gray Harbor County's Municipal Courts, which are also limited jurisdiction courts, primarily preside over city ordinance violations. They also hear cases relating to license penalties recovery or enforcement, as well as other ordinance-based forfeitures.
Gray Harbor County court records detail the activities of civil, criminal, and traffic case proceedings maintained by a court clerk. These records, which ensure the effective delivery of justice, also bolster citizens' confidence in the judicial process and provide legal precedents for present and future court cases.
