Chittenden County

Chittenden County is the most populated county in Vermont, with over a quarter of the state's population. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 168,323. Burlington is the county seat and the largest municipality in the county and the state. Chittenden County was created in 1787 and named after the first Governor of Vermont, Thomas Chittenden. The county's total area is 619 square miles, with 537 square miles of land and 83 square miles of water.

The Chittenden County Superior Court is the only court in the county with jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases. It has different divisions dedicated to specific cases. The Probate Division handles the administration of trusts and estates, admission of wills, and appointment of guardianships. The Civil Division hears all civil cases and appeals from the Probate Division. The Criminal Division hears all misdemeanor and felony cases. The Family Division hears family and juvenile matters, including dissolution of civil union, divorce, annulment, juvenile delinquency, paternity, visitation, and family support cases.
