Henry County
Henry County was established in 1777 as Patrick Henry County and renamed to its current name in 1790. It is estimated to have a population of 50,760 residents and covers approximately 382.4 square miles of land. The county seat is Martinsville.
The Henry County court system includes a Circuit Court, a General District Court, and a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The Circuit Court takes on all probate, felony, civil claims worth over $25,000 and any divorce cases. It hears cases appealed from the General District Court and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The General District Court deals with misdemeanors and small claims (less than $5,000), handles traffic infractions, and conducts preliminary hearings for felonies. It shares jurisdiction with the Circuit Court over civil cases with claims between $4,500 and $25,000. The Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court presides over all matters involving juveniles, such as criminal and traffic. In addition, the court addresses family cases such as custody, support, abuse, and visitations.
