City of Lynchburg County
Lynchburg is a city of 50 square miles that was first settled in 1757 by ferry owner John Lynch. It is located at the geographical center of the state and approximately 180 miles southwest of Washington D.C. Commonly referred to as the City of Seven Hills, the city is home to a population of 79,535 as of 2023.
Lynchburg City court system consists of a Circuit Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and District Court. The Lynchburg Circuit Court hears a myriad of legal matters, such as felonies, probate matters, civil lawsuits for amounts exceeding $25,000, family matters, and cases appealed from the other courts within the court system. Additionally, it shares jurisdiction with the General District Court over claims between $4,500 and $25,000.
The General District Court hears landlord-tenant disputes, contract disputes, misdemeanors, personal injury claims, and traffic cases. In contrast, the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court manages legal matters related to children and family relationships, including juvenile delinquency and status offenses, spousal support, emancipation, abuse and neglect, child visitation, and termination of parental rights.
Court records in Lynchburg City are mostly available for public inspection unless sealed or classified as confidential by state law or court order. These records can be accessed at the court clerk's office where the case was initiated. The court clerk manages the dissemination of records to interested parties, subject to applicable fees.
