Chesterfield County
Formed in 1749, Chesterfield County is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia between the James River in the north and the Appomattox River in the south. It has a land area of 421 square miles. As of the 2020 census, its population of 364,548 makes it the fourth most-populated county in Virginia. The county seat is Chesterfield Court House.
The court system in Chesterfield County comprises juvenile, general district, and circuit courts. The Chesterfield County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court handles juvenile and domestic relations matters except divorce. The court may also hear criminal cases involving harm to a child. The Chesterfield County General District Court hears misdemeanors, county ordinance violations, traffic violations, and preliminary hearings for felony cases. It has exclusive jurisdiction over civil cases with claims of less than $4,500 but may also hear civil cases with claims between $4,500 and $25,000.
The Chesterfield County Circuit Court has general jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases in the county. It hears felonies and misdemeanors involving grand jury indictments. While the court may hear civil cases with more than $4,500 claims, it has exclusive jurisdiction over civil cases with more than $25,000 claims. It also hears divorce, property disputes, and probate cases.
