Uintah County was created in 1880 and named after the Ute Native American tribe and is located in northeastern Utah. It is the state's sixth-largest county by land, covering about 4,483 square miles. The county has a population of 35,951 residents, while its county seat is Venal.

Uintah County has three trial courts: the District, Juvenile, and Justice Courts. The District Court in Uintah County functions within the state's Eighth Judicial District. It exercises general jurisdiction over legal proceedings outside the scope of other trial courts in Uintah County. The highest court presides over all felonies and class A misdemeanors. It also hears and decides civil lawsuits involving monetary disputes, contract breaches, domestic violence protective orders, probate of wills, marriage dissolutions, and adoption cases.

Meanwhile, the Juvenile Court oversees all court cases involving minors in Uintah County. This includes juvenile traffic offenses, delinquencies, parental rights termination, and child dependency cases. Uintah County has Justice Courts in Venal and Naples cities. These courts handle minor misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and municipal violations that occur within their jurisdictions. They also resolve small claims disputes where the amount in controversy is $10,000 or less.
