Davis County
Located in northern Utah, Davis County has a population of 362,679 as of the 2020 decennial census. It is the smallest county in the state in terms of land area, covering only 299 square miles. The county's largest and most populous city is Layton.
The Davis County trial court system consists of district court, juvenile court, and justice court. The Second Judicial District Court has general jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases; it handles serious felonies punishable by imprisonment as well as assaults, evictions, contract breaches, personal injury, and property disputes. Furthermore, the court hears cases involving family law, divorce, child support, and deceased person's estate.
The Davis County Justice Court hears criminal cases about infractions, municipal ordinance violations, and Class B and C misdemeanors, including those committed by juveniles older than 16. The court's jurisdiction in civil cases is limited to small claims in which disputed amounts are $10,000 or less, excluding interest and court costs.
The Second District Juvenile Court has exclusive jurisdiction over juvenile delinquency cases such as reckless driving, DUI, joy riding, vehicle homicide, and attempt to elude police. It is also within the court's jurisdiction to hold hearings on the abuse of neglected children, emancipation and guardianship of minors, and termination of parent-child relationship.
