Tom Green County
The Texas legislature organized Tom Green County on March 13, 1874. It was named after Thomas Green, a Confederate brigadier general. The Jumano Indians were the initial residents that Father Juan de Salas visited and worked alongside in the 17th century. Tom Green County has a population of 118,892 residents, covering an area of 1,522 square miles. The main economic activities in the county are mining, oil and gas extraction, agriculture, and utilities.
Tom Green County has four judicial districts. These include the 51st District Court, 340th District Court, 391st District Court, and the 119th District Court. These courts have a general jurisdiction, which means they hear criminal, civil, small claims, and probate cases. Typically district courts also have jurisdiction over matters that another trial court has not handled. Each court has an appointed criminal magistrate judge who hears felony criminal matters according to assignment. The magistrate would preside over the juvenile drug court and felony drug court as well. Tom Green County has four other courts specializing in child protection, felony drug, child support, and juvenile drug cases.
