Rockwall County
Rockwall County is situated in northern Texas. With a land area of 127.2 square miles, it is the smallest county in Texas. The county is named for a wall-shaped subterranean rock formation running through the county. Rockwall County has a population of over 107,000.
Rockwall County trial court system comprises municipal courts, justice courts, county courts at law, constitutional county courts, and district courts.
Rockwall County municipal courts have exclusive and original jurisdiction over city or municipal ordinance violations. They also share jurisdiction with justice of the peace courts over some misdemeanor criminal cases where the prescribed penalty is only a small fine.
Justice courts usually handle civil matters where the amount in dispute is less than $20,000 and also hear cases such as Class C misdemeanor criminal cases. County courts at law have their jurisdiction placed higher than justice of the peace courts but lower than that of the district court. These courts preside over misdemeanor criminal trials and civil trials including juvenile and family law cases. The courts also have jurisdiction over probate matters, including mental health matters and guardianships.
Constitutional county courts have original jurisdiction over uncontested probate matters, and they also hear criminal cases where the penalty is a fine of not more than $500 or a jail sentence of no more than 12 months.
The district courts are the general jurisdiction trial courts presiding over felony criminal trials and civil trials, including family law and juvenile cases. Additionally, they have jurisdiction over cases filed by the Texas Department of Regulatory Services.
