The court system in Orange County is made up of District Courts, a Constitutional County Court, County Courts of Law, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts. The District Courts issue temporary restraining orders, deal with serious criminal offenses, and process cases involving unpaid tax. The Constitutional County Court handles misdemeanors, probate of wills, small claims, and juvenile matters. The County Courts at Law share jurisdiction with the Constitutional County Court over juvenile, misdemeanors, and probate cases. The Justice Courts handle Class C misdemeanors, and eviction cases, conduct preliminary hearings, and process traffic tickets.
The County Clerk serves as the original custodian of court records. The clerk sees to it that records are kept in a way that will not make way for the destruction of records. Older records are usually stored in courthouses, while new records must go through the process of e-filing. This ensures that the use of modern-day technology is used to electronically retrieve records on time and effectively.
