Liberty County

Liberty County is located in eastern Texas. It was originally founded in 1831 as a municipality in Mexico but was later organized as a Texas county in 1836. The county's seat is Liberty City, the third-oldest city in Texas. According to data recorded during the 2020 U.S. Census, Liberty County has a population of 91,628 residents and covers a total land area of 1,158 square miles.

The judicial system of Liberty County comprises its District Courts, Constitutional County Court, County Court at Law, Justice of the Peace Courts, and Municipal Courts. Liberty County's District Courts are the courts with the highest jurisdiction in the county. They have original jurisdiction over felonies, land title disputes, election disputes, and divorce cases. The Constitutional County Courts handle domestic violence cases, civil matters where the disputed amount ranges from $200 to $10,000, and misdemeanors with potential penalties of less than one year in jail. These courts also share probate jurisdiction with the District Courts. County Courts at Law generally oversee Class A and Class B misdemeanors, preliminary hearings for felonies, civil claims under $250,000, juvenile cases, and certain probate matters. Justice of the Peace Courts have authority over Class C misdemeanors and minor civil matters. They also serve as small claims courts and have the power to issue search or arrest warrants. Municipal Courts exclusively handle cases involving violations of city ordinances.
