Grayson County
Grayson County was founded in 1846 and named after Peter Grayson, an attorney general of the Republic of Texas. It covers 933 square miles and has its administrative seat in Sherman. As of the 2020 census, 135,543 people live in the county.
The Grayson County court system comprises the following:
- Grayson County Constitutional Court - has jurisdiction over probate and juvenile matters
- Grayson County Court at Law - has concurrent jurisdiction with the Justice of the Peace Court. It hears civil cases with claims between $500 and $250,000, family law, protective orders, and class A or B misdemeanors
- Grayson County Justice of the Peace - handles preliminary hearings for criminal cases, traffic infractions, and misdemeanors. There are four Justice of Peace precincts in the county: JP1, JP2, JP3, and JP4
- Grayson County municipal courts handle preliminary hearings for felony cases and Class C misdemeanors that cannot be penalized with incarceration, such as municipal ordinance violations and traffic infractions. There are municipal courts in Bells, Denison, Collinsville, Gunter, Howe, Pottsboro, Sherman, Southmayd, Tioga, Tom Bean, Van Alstyne, Whitesboro, and Whitewright
- Grayson County district courts handle cases that fall outside the purview of the county's other courts. They hear criminal, civil, and domestic cases. There are three district courts in Grayson County: 15th, 59th, and 397th District Courts
Grayson County public court records consist of writs, transcripts, orders, court filings, legal proceedings, and judgments of the county's courts. The Grayson County Court Clerk's Office maintains public court records from the Constitutional, County at Law, and Justice of Peace courts. Public court records from the District Courts are kept by the Grayson County District Clerk. However, each municipal and mayor's court is responsible for keeping its records.
