Brazos County
Brazos County is situated in the center of a triangle bounded by Austin, Houston, and Dallas/Fort Worth. It was established in 1843 and named for the Brazos River. Its largest city is College Station and its county seat is Bryan. More than 240,000 people live in Brazos County.
The court structure in Brazos County consists of municipal courts, justice courts, county courts at law, constitutional county courts, and district courts. The municipal courts handle violations of local ordinances, including code abatement cases, civil parking offenses, dangerous dog determinations. Justice courts have jurisdiction in cases of forcible entry and detainer, foreclosure of mortgages and enforcement of liens on personal property, and civil matters in which the exclusive jurisdiction is not in the county or district court and in which the amount in dispute is not more than $20,000, exclusive of interest.
The two county courts at law in Brazos County have jurisdiction over misdemeanor criminal, condemnation, family, and probate, including guardianship, estates, and mental health. These courts hear appeals from justice of the municipal courts and peace courts, and administrative appeals of driver's license suspensions after hearing at the Department of Public Safety. County courts at law also share concurrent civil trial jurisdiction with the district courts in cases where the amount in controversy is up to $250,000.
Constitutional county courts in Brazos typically have jurisdiction over all Class A and B misdemeanor criminal cases. District courts in the county are the chief trial courts and the courts of general jurisdictions. Hence, no other court has been authorized by Texas law to hear your case, it will be heard in the district court. Brazos County district courts hear felony cases and misdemeanor criminal cases associated with a defendant charged with a felony case.
