Brazoria County
Located in southeastern Texas, Brazoria County was the first capital of the Republic of Texas and was founded in 1836. It was named for the Brazos River and covers a total land area of 4,170 square kilometers and a population of over 370,000 people. Its largest city is Pearland, while the county seat is Angleton.
The court structure in the county comprises the municipal courts, justice courts, county courts at law, constitutional county courts, and district courts. Municipal courts typically process Class C criminal charges filed by law enforcement, fire marshal, animal control, and code enforcement offices. Justice courts hear some civil and criminal matters, such as traffic misdemeanors.
The county courts at law in Brazoria are general jurisdiction courts. These courts have jurisdiction over adult criminal misdemeanor cases, civil cases with amounts in dispute of up to $200,000, probate and guardianship cases, juvenile cases, family law cases, condemnation or eminent domain cases, and appeals from justice and municipal courts.
Constitutional county courts have original jurisdiction over Class A and Class B misdemeanor criminal cases. The district court handles cases beyond the jurisdiction of other courts in the county. It is the court of general jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters.
