Wilson County
Wilson County occupies 583.27 square miles in the heart of Tennessee and was created in 1799, three years after the organization of the state itself. With a population of 163,674 as of 2023, the county has three incorporated areas, including Watertown, Lebanon, and Mt. Juliet.
In Wilson County, the court system includes two main trial courts: the Circuit Court and the Chancery Court. Furthermore, it encompasses three courts with limited jurisdiction, specifically the General Sessions Courts, Municipal Courts, and Juvenile Court. The Wilson Circuit Court handles cases through two separate courts. Legal matters relating to domestic relations, personal injury, adoption, and medical malpractice are heard in the Civil Court. Conversely, the Criminal Court handles all criminal jury trials and felony cases.
The Chancery Court is statutorily authorized to hold hearings for numerous types of cases, such as divorce, will contests, boundary disputes, contract disputes, appointment and removal of trustees, and conservatorships. The Juvenile Court is responsible for hearing all civil and criminal matters concerning juveniles.
The General Sessions Court I and II address civil lawsuits with monetary values up to $25,000. In criminal law, these courts handle preliminary hearings for felony cases and misdemeanor trials. The General Sessions Court III is where family law matters involving domestic relations and child support are heard. Wilson Municipal Courts preside over cases involving city laws and municipal court judges may impose fines up to $50 and sentences of up to 30 days in jail.
Wilson County court records are documents created, collected, and maintained by the county courts as part of the official court file in association with a particular case. The Circuit Court Clerk is the official custodian of court records for the Juvenile Court, Circuit Criminal, and Civil Courts, as well as the General Sessions Courts I, II, and III. However, probate and chancery case files are kept by the Clerk and Master.
