Maury County
Maury County, located in central Tennessee, was established in 1807. The county was formed from Williamson County and named in honor of Abram Maury, a member of the state senate. It is a part of the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area, with Columbia as its county seat. As of 2022, the county has a population of about 102,002 residents and spans around 613.1 square miles.
The Maury County court system comprises Circuit, Chancery, General Sessions, Juvenile, and Municipal Courts. The Circuit Court handles serious criminal cases, most general civil cases without financial thresholds, and certain contract cases. It exercises exclusive jurisdiction over disputes about the validity of a will and cases related to arbitration and restoration of citizenship. The General Sessions Court has limited jurisdiction over the preliminaries relating to misdemeanor trials and any criminal cases where there is no jury, and civil claims not exceeding $25,000, while the Chancery Court handles matters like probate of wills, administration of estates, guardianships, conservatorships, and land disputes. It also hears certain types of requests by creditors. Juvenile Court focuses on cases involving minors, including delinquency and other juvenile cases such as juvenile dependency, child abuse and neglect, and judicial consent to employment or military enlistment. The Municipal Courts, including those in Columbia and Spring Hill, generally manage the majority of violations of municipal ordinances as well as specific criminal cases. They may impose fines and short-term jail sentences.
