Orangeburg County

Orangeburg County, created in 1769 by European Americans from lands between the Congaree and Savannah Rivers, covers about 1,106.4 square miles. It is the second-largest county in South Carolina by total area, with an estimated population of 84,159. The administrative headquarters is in the city of Orangeburg.

The Orangeburg County court structure consists of a Circuit Court, a Family Court, Magistrate Courts, and Municipal Courts. The Orange County Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction with two divisions. The Court of Common Pleas division handles civil cases with more than $7,500 claims. The Court of General Sessions division presides over felony and misdemeanor cases. The Circuit Court generally hears appeals from the lower court. The Family Court has exclusive jurisdiction over all domestic relations, juvenile, and family-related cases. It also handles cases involving minors alleged to have violated any state law or municipal ordinance. The Orangeburg County Probate Court oversees probate matters such as wills, estates of decedents, and guardianships and conservatorships. The Magistrate Court, with three regional offices, conducts preliminary hearings, misdemeanors, and civil cases in which the amount in contention is less than $7,500. Some cities have Municipal Courts that preside over traffic infractions and ordinance violations.
