Wayne County

Named after Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne, Wayne County was established from parts of Northampton County in 1798. The county has a population of more than 50,000 people and covers over 700 square miles. Its county seat and largest borough is Honesdale.

Wayne County's trial court system consists of a Court of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Courts. The Court of Common Pleas handles civil and criminal cases that are beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. It presides over criminal felonies and general civil claims, including juvenile cases, adoptions, domestic relations, and appeals from certain administrative agencies. Also, the court handles cases relating to wills, estates, guardianships, adoptions, child custody, and child abuse.

The Magisterial District Courts deal with preliminary hearings, misdemeanors, traffic offenses, summary offenses, and other minor criminal cases. These courts handle civil matters such as landlord-tenant disputes, small claims cases, and general civil claims in which the amount of money in dispute is up to $12,000.

Wayne County public court records consist of documents and materials related to legal proceedings in the county. Examples of these records include case indexes, transcripts of proceedings, dockets, court calendars, pleadings, judgments, and orders.

The Wayne County Clerk of Courts is responsible for filing and preserving official records generated from court cases in the county. The clerk's office processes and maintains these records and ensures they are accessible to members of the public.
