Northampton County

Northampton County was formed in 1752 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It covers about 369.8 square miles of land, making it the 59th largest county in Pennsylvania by total area. Northampton County has a population of over 312,951, and Easton serves as the county seat.

The Northampton County court system comprises three Common Pleas Courts and 14 Magisterial District Courts. The Northampton County Common Pleas Courts, which are trial courts of general jurisdiction, handle every one of the criminal and civil cases, including felonies, standard civil claims that have no monetary limitations, domestic relations matters, appeals of certain decisions of administrative agencies, and arbitration reviews. The court consists of the Orphan's Court Division, Civil Court Division, and Criminal Court Division. The Northampton County Magisterial District Courts maintain authority over specific varieties of criminal and civil cases, including nearly all preliminary hearings, some violations of ordinance, and civil claims under $12,000. The Magisterial District Courts don't enjoy authority over any of the civil cases for or against the State.
