Mercer County
Located in the northwest region of Pennsylvania, Mercer County was created in 1800 and organized in 1803. It has a land area of 673 square miles and as of the 2020 US census, a population of 110,652. Mercer is its county seat, and Hermitage is its largest city.
The two courts in Mercer County are the Court of Common Pleas and the Magisterial District Court. The Mercer County Court of Common Pleas has general jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. It handles major criminal cases, domestic relations, juvenile matters, and civil cases with more than $12,000 in claims. Its Orphan's Court handles all civil marriages, guardianship, wills, and estates.
There are five Magisterial District Court locations in Mercer County: Sharon, Farrell, Mercer, Grove City, and Greenville. The Mercer County Magisterial District Court hears civil cases with claims under $12,000 and criminal cases, including traffic infractions, landlord-tenant disputes, and small claims. Additionally, preliminary hearings for felony cases can be handled by this court.
Mercer County court records are court documents, including case filings, writs, motions, warrants, court transcripts, responses, orders, and judgments from courts in the county. The majority of these records are available for public viewing and request unless made confidential by law or court orders. Records of civil cases are maintained by the Mercer County Office of the Prothonotary. The Mercer County Clerk of Courts, Register of Wills, and Clerk of Orphans' Court maintains criminal, juvenile, and probate records. Records from the magisterial District Courts are maintained by the District Court Administration.
