Polk County
Situated in the Willamette Valley, Polk County was officially created from Yamhill District in 1845 by the Oregon Provisional Legislature. It is home to over 90,000 people, and its largest city is Dallas. The county was named for James Knox Polk, the 11th president of the United States.
The Polk County Circuit Court is the 12th Judicial District within the Oregon Judicial Branch and handles a vast majority of civil and criminal matters. The types of civil actions filed in the Circuit Court include small claims for amounts up to $10,000, property disputes, contract disputes, and personal injury claims. In criminal law, this court is responsible for all felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic infractions. Additionally, the Circuit Court hears juvenile cases, family law matters, probate matters, and appeals from decisions made in the Municipal Courts.
Polk County Municipal Courts are located in Monmouth, Falls City, Independence, and Dallas. These courts only have authority within their city limits and typically hold hearings for parking infractions, city ordinance violations, trespassing, disorderly conduct, and other minor offenses.
