Douglas County
Douglas County was established in 1852 and was named for Senator Steven A. Douglas. It is located in Southwestern Oregon. Douglas County has about 5,035.7 square miles of land, making it the 5th largest county in Oregon by total area, and is home to over 111,201 people. Roseburg serves as the county seat.
The Douglas County court system consists of a Circuit Court, eight Municipal Courts, and two Justice Courts. The Douglas County Circuit Court is a trial court that handles all types of civil and criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, juveniles, small claims, adoption, and guardianship cases. The Douglas County Municipal Courts have limited jurisdiction over certain types of criminal, traffic, and ordinance violation cases. They share jurisdiction with Circuit Courts and Justice Courts over ordinance violations and misdemeanor criminal cases. The Douglas County Justice Courts have jurisdiction over cases such as traffic violations, forcible entry, misdemeanor criminal cases, as well as civil suits and small claims up to $10,000. The primary responsibility of Justice Courts is to ease the caseload of the Circuit Courts and serve the outlying areas of the county.
