Richland County
Richland County was founded in 1813 and named for its fertile soil. The county seat is Mansfield. It covers about 495.2 square miles, making it the 26th largest county in Ohio by total area, with approximately 124,936 residents.
The Richland County judicial system consists of four Common Pleas Courts, two Municipal Courts, and seven Mayor's Courts. Richland County Common Pleas Courts are the county's trial courts. They handle most civil and criminal cases, including felonies, mental health cases, and domestic relations cases. These courts are divided into divisions such as the Domestic Relations Division, Juvenile Division, and Probate Division. The Domestic Relations Division hears cases related to dissolution, legal separation, and civil domestic violence cases. On the other hand, the Juvenile Division handles cases involving child abuse and neglect. The Probate Division hears cases involving adoptions, guardianships, and mental health cases. Less severe cases, including violations of municipal ordinances, traffic violations, and preliminary felony hearings, are handled by Richland County Municipal Courts. Mayor's Courts have authority over cases involving local traffic violations and quasi-criminal cases in areas that are not within the jurisdiction of Municipal Courts.
