Miami County
Miami County was established in 1807 as part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located in western Ohio and was named in honor of the Miami people. The county covers about 406.6 square miles and has a population of approximately 108,818 people. Troy, the county's largest city, serves as the county seat.
The Miami County judicial system includes the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court. The Common Pleas Court has general jurisdiction over all criminal cases and civil cases, including felonies and civil cases in which the amount in dispute exceeds $15,000. It is categorized into specialized divisions for general, domestic relations, probate, and juvenile cases. The General Division handles civil and criminal cases as well as appeals from most administrative agencies' decisions. The Domestic Relations Division deals with cases of divorce, child support, and child custody. Probate matters, including wills, estates, and guardianships, are handled by the Probate Division, while the Juvenile Division handles offenses involving minors, such as juvenile traffic and most paternity cases. The Municipal Court oversees misdemeanors, small claims, most civil cases with disputes valued under $15,000, municipal ordinance violations, some parking and most township resolution violations, and preliminary hearings for felony cases.
Miami County court records include case files, motions, pleadings, judicial notes, court dockets, judgments, trial transcripts, and exhibits generated from the county's court proceedings.
