Butler County
Butler County is located in the southwestern part of Ohio and was established on March 24, 1803. It covers 470 square miles and has a population of over 390,000 inhabitants. Its largest city, Hamilton, also serves as the county seat. The county was named after General Richard Butler.
Butler County Courts are divided into Area I, Area II, and Area III court jurisdictions. Each Area Court has its own geographical jurisdiction from which cases can be brought and decided. It is within the jurisdiction of the Area Courts to handle traffic and misdemeanor cases, civil actions up to $15,000, domestic violence cases, and OVI offenses.
The Court of Common Pleas of Butler County has original jurisdiction over civil cases and felonies. Generally, it handles cases that are beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. Furthermore, this court performs its roles through its General Division, Domestic Relations Division, Juvenile Division, and Probate Division.
Butler County Municipal Courts have jurisdiction over certain types of cases. They hear civil cases including replevins, interpleaders, and personal property recovery. Additionally, these courts hear criminal cases such as municipal ordinances resolutions, traffic and non-traffic misdemeanors, and parking violations.
