Seneca County
Formed in 1804 from part of Cayuga County, Seneca County covers an area of approximately 323.7 square miles. It is home to an estimated population of 33,651 residents. The county seats are the Village of Waterloo and the Town of Ovid.
Seneca County's court structure has a Supreme Court, a County Court, a Family Court, a Surrogate's Court, and Town and Village Courts. The Supreme Court has unlimited jurisdiction but generally hears divorce and civil cases beyond the monetary limits of the lower courts. The County Court handles felony and civil cases with disputes of less than $25,000. It receives appeals from the Town and Village Courts. The Family Court presides over family matters, including child custody, adoption, support, paternity, and juvenile delinquencies. The Surrogate's Court handles decedents' wills and estates, adoptions, and guardianship. The Town and Village Courts address traffic infractions, small claims (up to $3,000), misdemeanors, and ordinance violations.
