Oswego County
Established in 1816 from parts of Albany County, Oswego County encompasses 968 square miles of land and 360 square miles of water, totaling 1,328 square miles. It is home to approximately 117,525 residents, spread across two cities, 10 villages, and 22 towns. The City of Oswego serves as the county seat.
Oswego County is served by the Supreme Court, County Court, Family Court, Surrogate's Court, City Court, and Town and Villages Courts. Most civil and criminal matters fall under the Supreme Court's jurisdiction, but it typically handles cases outside the lower courts' jurisdictions. However, it cannot adjudicate cases involving claims filed against the state. On the other hand, the County Court hears criminal proceedings and civil action under $25,000 while the Surrogate's Court handles decedents' matters concerning estates administration, wills, and guardianships. In Oswego County, the Family Court adjudicates juvenile delinquency, child custody, adoption, child support, and paternity cases. Additionally, lesser offenses, including misdemeanors, preliminary hearings for felonies, landlord/tenant disputes, small claims, and civil matters under $15,000, are resolved by the City Courts. The Town and Village Courts in the county handle traffic infractions, misdemeanors, and non-criminal cases with claims up to $3,000.
In Oswego County, public court records are generated during hearings at the county courthouses and managed by the County Clerk. These records include documents and case files or information, such as transcripts, filings, and court judgments. Physical copies of Oswego County court records are preserved at the courthouses or the records custodian's office.
