Nassau County

Located east of NYC, Nassau County was established in 1899 and is one of the original counties formed after the consolidation of Queens County. Its name comes from an old name for Long Island, which used to be called “Nassau” after the Dutch Prince William of Nassau. As of July 2023, Nassau County had an estimated population of 1,381,715 and a total area of 453 square miles, of which 284.54 square miles is land.

Nassau County has an extensive trial court system that consists of the following types of courts:

  • County Courts that handle felonies and civil matters up to $25,000.
  • City Courts that handle civil matters up to $15,000, misdemeanors, and lesser offenses (that carry a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment).

  • A Family Court that handles cases involving children and families, such as child custody and visitation, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and juvenile delinquency.
  • A Surrogate's Court that handles probate of wills, the administration of estates, adoptions, and other similar matters involving the affairs of decedents.
  • Village Courts that handle felony arraignments, misdemeanors, violations, and civil matters up to $3,000.
  • Specialized Problem-Solving and Sex Offense Courts that offer intensive, closely monitored treatment services and rehabilitation programs for eligible participants.

Nassau County public court records are official documents generated by court proceedings and other court-related activities within the county. These records can include a wide range of documents, such as court filings, case summaries, trial transcripts, court orders, summonses, subpoenas, motions, settlement agreements, verdicts, and judgments. The Nassau County Clerk of Court's Office is responsible for maintaining these public court records and ensuring that they are properly stored, organized, and accessible to the public as required by law.

You can request copies of Nassau County court records by directly contacting the clerk's office in the courthouse where the case was handled.
